LBH Papua: Police Arrest KNPB Head Agus Kossay for Treason

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The police have reportedly apprehended Agus Kossay, the head of the National Committee for West Papua (KNPB), on charges of treason. The arrest was carried out in Hawai Sentani, Papua, on Monday afternoon, September 16.
The Papua Legal Aid (LBH Papua) director, Emanuel Gobay, confirmed the issue. “Yes, he is arrested. Now, Agus Kossay is detained in Kotaraja Mobile Brigade Headquarters (Mako Brimob), Jayapura City,” said Emanuel alias Edo in a phone call, Wednesday, September 18.
Edo explained that Agus was nabbed for allegedly committing treason. He is charged with Article 106 of the Criminal Code (KUHP), in which stipulated life imprisonment or a maximum of 20 years behind bars.
Edo added that the legal aid along with the Papua Human Rights Advocates Coalition accompanied Agus during police’s preliminary investigation. “We have accompanied Agus Kossay in the initial examination in Mako Brimob,” he said.
Previously reported, the National Police made several arrests following Papuan students’ rally against racism and discrimination in front of State Palace, Jakarta on August 28. To date, six students have been named suspects from the demonstration where they raised Bintang Kejora or Morning Star flag, a symbol of the Free Papua Movement.
